Get Out On The Trails

The Deer River area has plenty of trails for everyone – hikers, bikers, ATVers, and campers. Explore both paved trails for easy walking around scenic areas, and forest roads for trekking into the wilderness and camping. The Paul Bunyan State Recreational Trail offers fun for all ages all year round for biking, hiking, and snowmobiling while the Blueberry Hills Trail is perfect for cross-country skiing in the winter for year-round enjoyment.

Paul Bunyan State Recreational Trail

Built along abandoned rail corridors, these trails are great venues for easy- going exploration. This trail is over 120 miles of paved trail for biking, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Blueberry Hills Trail

The Blueberry Hills Trail is a 12 km trackset with mostly intermediate-level skate-ski trails. Set along Chase Lake, the path winds through pine and hardwood forests with rolling to steep hills. The City Forest offers additional trails for various activities, including horseback riding, bird and wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, ATV riding, and snowshoeing.

Simpson Creek Recreation Area

Discover this 2.1-mile loop trail near Deer River, Minnesota. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 39 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, mountain biking, and walking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring.

North Country National Scenic Trail

Part of the longest continuous footpath in North America, the North Country Trail cuts through the Chippewa National Forest, across Hubbard County, through Itasca State Park, and to the Tamarac National Wildlife NWR.

Heartland Trail

West of Walker is Minnesota’s oldest paved trail, with miles of beautiful lakes, forest scenery, wildlife, and flowers. This 49 mile paved multiple-use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake is a great trek for biking or hiking. During the winter months, the Heartland Trail offers miles of groomed snowmobile trail riding. Walker is a great stopping point while using this trail.

Migizi Trail

Enjoy 18 miles of paved non-motorized hiking/biking trails in the Chippewa National Forest along the eastern edge of Cass Lake and Pike Bay.
